About the supervision group

Our focus is on connecting with Dr. Violet Oaklander’s projective arts-based approach to therapy. Several members from the 2021 supervision group have some experience of this through participating in one or more of my Oaklander-based courses on child or adolescent therapy (see my events listing page for details of my courses).

The supervision group offers a confidential place to give and receive support and to try out relational ways of engaging children and adolescents in an exploratory dialogue using the arts as a support. The group also offers:

  • a space for consultation from peers and myself on emergent casework issues
  • opportunity to share practice dilemmas
  • opportunity to continue experimenting with using projective arts

We have access to materials on site so can explore using clay, drawing and painting, music-making, movement work, puppets, sandtray and other media.

An interest in Violet’s approach is a basic requirement to join this group. Participants unfamiliar with her work are asked to read one or more of Violet’s books:

Or you may view her DVDs, available to purchase from the Violet Soloman Oaklander Foundation website. I also recommend Peter Mortola’s Windowframes , an account of an Oaklander-type training group which gives a flavour of what participatory learning in a dialogic, experiential Gestalt arts approach might feel like.

Incidentally, anyone wishing to join my 2022 5-day Working with children part 1 training is also welcome to do so.

I’m happy to discuss what the supervision group and the working with children training entail, without further obligation. You are very welcome to meet me at my practice in Acton, London W3. Or we can connect in the first instance via Zoom.

Visitors to my practice should note that we have a small, friendly, hypoallergenic dog, ‘Coco’ on the premises. Coco acts as my co-therapist in client sessions.

About Jon Blend

I am a dual-qualified adult and child psychotherapist, working from a predominately Gestalt/integrative stance while incorporating ideas from attachment, family systems, psychodynamic and the person-centred approach. I am also a performing musician. I first trained with Violet Oaklander over 20 years ago and am an active member of the Violet Oaklander Foundation. I am the only person teaching Violet’s approach in the UK and I have been writing about Violet’s methods for many years.

Oaklander Foundation international conference, 2021

In June 2021, I gave a presentation on sleep and visualisation work at the Oaklander Foundation international conference in California.
